Web sites for women in science

Aa Aa Aa

Dear friends of women in science,

Susan Forsburg has been updating her internet launch page with resources for women about biology careers. The new url is:http://www.womenbio.net and I highly recommend that site. It has information about some of the controversies about women in science, resources on bias, resources on building a career, and more. Susan says her the links are mostly updated, and she'd appreciate hearing about any that are broken so she can put them on the fast track to be fixed.

This web site is such an impressive resource for all women in science that it was a major part of Susan's nomination for AWIS Fellowship and for the Alice Evans Award from the American Society for Microbiology. It's worth spending some time with it so you can find all the ways it will be useful to you, especially if you are in biology and in academia. But I know that many of you belong to neither of these categories and I'd like to find out what web sites you like? My very first post on this blog was a list of some that I like, but some of them have gone dark and others have sprung up. And there are apparently many such sites out there. Please let us know in the comments so we can all look at them.

cheers,

Laura

Hi Laura,
I like the Oreal one called Agora. You can see it here: http://agora.forwomeninscience.com/. Recently it had posted the women who had won the big L'Oreal awards, including Rashkia El Ridl of Egypt who had made big discoveries in immunology. I know it's a makeup company, but the site is not just focused on their products or anything and it covers women in science in all kinds of settings.

Hi Laura,
I thought I'd see what was out there on the internet when you asked this. One of the top hits hasn't posted anything for two years. A lot of the hits are about a conference where women who blog about wis issues said they had to use pseudonyms to protect themselves. Then there are lists, but they are pretty lame and out of date. The best one I found is this: http://womeninplanetaryscience.wordpress.com which carries an announcement of a cool conference about women and Mars conference in mid November.
cheers,
Kaori

Good heavens! Keeping up with More than One women-in-science site? But I guess I'm lucky to be emeritus and not have to worry much about being a woman in science now.

I just hope that we gain more good than harm from hearing about our deficiencies in spatial abilities! I think we excel in some spatial skills, such as keeping track of many items. That's what once read. This is probably discussed in "Sex Differences in Cognitive Abilities," which I just got an ad for and viewed on amazon.

I like the one from Kate, your guest earlier, about bio careers. She covers topics for academia, industry, and free standing research oriented scientists. I like her feisty voice.

Hi Laura,
I do like the one Susan runs, and I also still like this one, Female Science Professor, but it's a real academic-oriented site. I'm interested to see what else people like to read.
