Questions people ask women in science
Hi friends of women in science,
I recently talked at a Mensa conference and I was surprised to find most of the questions people asked me, although I talked about my life in science and related that to the general situation for women in science, were questions about the experiments I had mentioned.
I started wondering, why was that such a surprise? My conclusion was, audiences generally won't ask me about science. Is that because I'm talking to a general audience or because I'm speaking about career paths and not much about molecular aging, my field? Not necessarily, but that has actually been my experience, even when I've spoken at places like Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. But these Mensa people were very interested in genomics and gene regulation in development, and hardly asked me anything about whether or not the situation was improving for women going in to STEM fields.
I am probably overly focused on stereotypes of STEM women but I just wonder if men who give a general talk have this experience. At one big conference on science in Canada where I was the keynote speaker, one man gave a talk about confidence and how he often felt like a fraud, so women shouldn't feel they are alone in this situation. After the talk, people asked him about his research topic mostly, which he had used to draw examples from. I can't compare my situation there because I gave a science talk and got science questions, and also gave a women-in-science talk and got general questions.
So what have you seen or experienced yourself? Perhaps most of you haven't been in this sort of ambiguous situation where you'd talk about a mixture of science and life, but if you have, what did you observe about questions?

Hi Helen,
I know what you mean. Somehow if you give a science talk, young women seem to think asking non-science questions is taboo. Maybe it is for some speakers! I'm sure the queen bees you mention wouldn't welcome such questions. Sometimes I say, after the wind up of the science slides, "and if you have questions about family life or careers, I'd be happy to discuss those too."

Hi Laura--I get an equal number of science questions regardless of what I talk about or the audience. In fact, I see a hesitation from young women to ask me non-science questions unless I have included a non-science topic in my talk. I attribute that to them not knowing which side I fall on in terms of being a queen bee or mentor unless I clearly state I'm on the mentoring side of the equation.

When I talk about science, I don't get weird questions but I don't get as many as guys who talk to the same groups. I don't know if that's because I don't set up questions by the way I talk or what.
I've never given a general talk, so I don't know about that. Interesting thoughts.
