No Women Win Nobel Prize in Science in 2013
Dear friends of women in science:
The Nobel Prizes in sciences have been announced for 2013. All of them went to men again. I am disappointed that no women have been recognized since 2009 in sciences.

Chemistry, for computational chemistry of complex reactions:
Martin Karplus of the University of Strasbourg, France, and Harvard University; Michael Levitt of the Stanford University School of Medicine, and Arieh Warshel of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
Physiology or Medicine, for mechanisms of movement of substances about within cells:J
ames E. Rothman of Yale and Randy W. Schekman of the University of California, Berkeley; and German-American Dr. Thomas C. Sudhof of the Stanford University School of Medicine.
Physics, for a theory of how subatomic particles get mass:
Peter Higgs of Britain and Francois Englert of Belgium.
Do you think I'm over-reacting to say that women can't be getting a fair shake with so few recognized? Can you suggest any women you think deserve to receive a science Nobel prize?

Next time anyone is having a hard time thinking of a name, think Ingeborg Hochmair, who along with Blake WIlson and Graeme Clark, pioneered engineering of cochlear implants. Together they were Lasker award winners this year, so maybe we have to wait a few years before the Nobel.
Well, I have to disagree with Livi M. A Nobel Prize is a life-changing event, and it's recognized widely as the ultimate recognition for a scientist. I think their methods should be subject to sunshine laws and they should be fair to all. And I don't believe they can be. As for awards to women, I'd have liked to see one to Mary Lou Pardue for in situ hybridization, but probably the time for that is long past.

I care more about meeting invitations and speaking invitations at research universities. The Swedish Academy of Sciences is incalculable and I feel like we can't glorify or vilify their selections because we have no information about how they were chosen. All we know is the awardees get a lot of money and recognition.
