Thank a Woman for Higgs Boson Discovery

Hi friends of women in science,

Sonia Pressman Fuentes recently sent me a link to a CNN article by Rose Hoare, about Fabiola Gianotti, the woman who runs the supercollider project in Europe that has recently claimed a possible discovery of the Higgs boson, a mysterious particle that may explain mass.Gianotti is an experimental physicist who runs the Large Hadron Collider's largest detector, ATLAS, a world-leading accelerator located at CERN, near the French-Swiss border not far from Geneva. It was built between 1998 and 2008 to test for the supersymmetry theory's zoo of particles, particularly the elusive Higgs boson. The overall project involves some 10,000 scientists from 39 countries; CERN is a collaboration of 20 countries. Gianotti expects the tests this year to confirm or deny the current model of the structure of the universe. If not, there will be a delay until 2014 for upgrades to the accelerator so that higher energy collisions will become possible.
Although there is a lot of difference between the different countries of Europe in gender balance in science, overall less than a third of all European scientists are women. In the US, they make up less than a fourth. Fabiola Gianotti has not only succeeded in this challenging environment, but occupies one of the very highest positions in Europe in science. In a talk she delivered at the International Conference for High Energy Physics in Melbourne, Australia, Gianotti said that CERN teams have collected evidence for a new particle from the recent collisions that they hypothesize is the Higgs boson. You can see a video interview back in 2010 with her here. Then, she wasn't so confidently predicting that they would find the Higgs boson, which it seems has been found. I was interested that she was introduced as a spokesperson for the ATLAS personnel, but she herself said she was a physicist. A spokesperson usually implies someone in communications rather than science in my experience.

It's interesting because I read articles about the Higgs Boson before and believe they included her name, but I subconsciously assumed it was a man since most of the scientists I encounter who are talking about this project are male physicists. It's refreshing to know that my assumption was inaccurate.

Wow, she's really impressive. And no, I didn't know a thing about her before. That's just one reason I like to read your blog, Laura, you find these women whom I should know but don't yet.

BTW, I think you're right, it's not properly respectful to call her the spokesman instead of the lead scientist.

Dear Laura,

I knew about her b/c the NYT covers her every so often when they want to update us on ATLAS project. So there's still some good to be found in newspapers! I have recently gone to an online subscription, though, instead of all that paper we have to recycle. It really piles up if you subscribe every day.

Right, I didn't know her but I know few physicists, male or female, beyond Feynman and that guy who did the Cosmos TV shows...i.e. I know the popularizers, not the leading physicists. But thanks for the info. It sounds like she is someone of whom all of us women in science should be proud.
