Angela Kashuba featured in NIH Women in Science Update
Dear friends of women in science,
I received a new issue of the NIH's newsletter on women in science, and they featured an interesting woman named Angela Kashuba, PharmD, professor at UNC Eschelman School of Pharmacy. She is particularly interested in the pharmacology of drugs for HIV treatment. Early in her career, when she was an assistant professor, She received a BIRCWH mentored grant (Building Interdisciplinary Research Carees in Women's Health). It was sponsored by the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Heath and Development. Junior faculty members in this program receive protected time for research, grantsmanship training, and access to mentoring from outstanding people. The article said Dr. Kashuba "credits this... program with transforming her career." Her current areas of focus include preventive drug treatment for HIV and treatment of pregnant women and newborns. Her work using mass spectrometry to examine drug levels in people of different ages and genders has allowed her to optimize treatments. The group has shown that methods they developed can help prevent infection of newborns who are breast fed when the mother has HIV.
Dr. Kashuba herself has two children and has interesting comments to make on career-family balance. "Sometimes work priorities must be your focus, sometimes your family must your focus, sometimes your community must be your focus, and sometimes you must focus on yourself," she says. As we have discussed, there's no percentage for work-family balance that works all the time. A woman must respond to each situation she faces and adjust accordingly.
Another piece of advice from Angela Kashuba for young women in science is about opportunities. It's tempting to respond positively to the compliment implied in being offered a new opportunity for advancement or career change. Here is her advice:"I've learned that it's very important to critically evaluate the opportunities that come your way, to jump at those that are really meaningful, and to pass on those that aren't." For women, I would say that one of the issues might be, does this offer include more responsibility without more pay, or does it imply work hours that would interfere with family obligations? What other issues should be considered?

I use a great tool I learned from a life coach to help me decide whether an opportunity is right for me after I've done my homework to find out what kind of "opportunity" it really is.
Obviously those that are simply more work for no real increase in pay or title are not worth it to me at my career stage.
So if something makes the consideration cut I ask myself the following questions:
What effect will a yes decision have on me and the important people in my life ten minutes from now?
Ten months?
Ten years?
When I ran this simple tool on an "opportunity" that came along recently that had a great title bump, lots of money and prestige and even a little power thrown in, the problem came with the impact on my family. There was a lot of travel involved that was non-negotiable, and I have a young son. To me it wasn't worth it to take that opportunity because honestly, I wouldn't have been happy at even ten months into the job.
Thinking longer term sometimes helps to make things more objective.

Hi Susan and Mignon,
You both raise an interesting issue. As we've discussed, women tend not to ask for raises and promotions. We think if we do a good job, people (men) will recognize it and reward us.
If offered a promotion, then, it's not easy to say "no" because we're so hungry for that form of praise. Well, I agree. But if two years later you compare notes with Joe Tiger, who was hired two years after you were, screwed up and you had to save him countless times, and you find out he's making twice what you are, will you kick yourself? This isn't about instantaneous self-esteem, although it feels like it is. It's about long-term self respect. If you can bring yourself to ask a few questions, you'll be deciding if it really sounds good based on something besides a long overdue pat on the head.

Thanks for increasing the visibility of women in science. Every little bit helps! Someone out there may decide to nominate this woman for an award (I hope).
Your question is harder. I tend to assume that someone offering me an upgrade has noticed and appreciated my work, and since I don't hear that every day, it's hard to ignore. Okay, I love it. So, turning that down feels like biting the hand that finally petted me after years of neglect. I realize she's saying it's not always the best fit or the best situation that gets offered to you. I'm just saying, it's awfully hard to be snarky enough to detect that, as far as I'm concerned.
