RIP Monica Riley
Dear friends of women in science,
My biographies of biologists class has recently finished reading The Double Helix and Rosalind Franklin, Dark Lady of DNA back to back. We discussed how it was for women "back then" and today. They say it seems to them like not just the dawn of molecular biology but also sequencing the human genome and other genomes proved to be a largely male endeavor. I'd say, the men are the tip of the iceberg but lots of women were involved as well based on my own experiences.
Recently, one of these women who was a pinacle, not a hidden wonder, has passed away, Monica Riley. She had a particular interest in the E. coli genome, one of the most outstanding model organisms of all times in terms of molecular biology research. In The Scientist for Nov 5, 2013, Abby Olena profiled her briefly. She was an emeritus professor and co-founder of the Josphine Bay Paul Center for Comparative Molecular Biology and Evolution at Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole MA. She had recevied the AB in Chemistry from Smith College in 1947 and earned her PhD at UC Berkeley in 1960 with Arthur Pardee. There, she worked on how gene expression is regulated, doing early messenger RNA experiments with Pardee, Jacob and Monod. She had a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford, faculty appointments at UC Davis and SUNY Stony Brook, and finally at MBL. She co-founded the database EcoCyc, which according to MBL, "led the curation of metabolic pathways and genome information for Escherichia coli for over a decade." She pioneered gene classification ontologies at MBL until she retired at 80. She was 87 when she passed away in Richmond, CA.
MBL posted an obituary of Riley, emphasizing her comparative genomics work especially on E. coli. She is survived by two children, two stepchildren, two grandchildren, and other relatives according to Olena's profile.
