National Academy of Sciences List for 2010
The newly elected members of the US National Academy of Sciences have been released for 2010 and there are 14 women on the list of 72 US citizens elected. I counted them myself, looking up people with cryptic names to make sure which gender they were. That means that almost 20% of the scientists elected this year were women. Last year, I asked NAS for the percentage of women overall, and I was told it was not public information and there was no way I could get it from their web site or by asking them for it. I'd be astonished if the percentage of women in each year had not grown. I find it frustrating that they don't feel comfortable allowing the public to see that growth. Perhaps they feel that 20% isn't enough, or perhaps they feel the percentage of women is not relevant to excellence in science.
I am much happier with the way the Nobel Prize web site handles the issue of women. The site has a category on its sidebar called "Women Nobel Laureates." They also note the number and percentage of women when women are announced as laureates. Their numbers and percentages of laureates in Physiology and Medicine and in Chemistry do not approach 20% women, but the Nobel Prize site administrators still feel comfortable highlighting them, pointing out these women to serve as role models.
What do you think about this difference:
A. NAS is not obligated to release the percent women and I don't really care if they do or not.
B. I'd be interested in knowing the percent women and seeing how it has changed in recent classes of new members, but this isn't a hot-button issue for me.
C. I'm annoyed by their attitude. They should show us how they are doing in accepting the fact that women do top-flight science.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that as long as a committee of mostly white males selects new NAS members, they're gonna be embarassed about how many women get in.
I wonder if they (perhaps the most important greybeards running the election process) think that gender is simply irrelevant to the election to the academy and only quality matters? I am sure that has not always been true, whether or not it is today. I'm skeptical that 20% women that they have today is catching all of the great women in science who should be members, but was pleased to see Angelika Amon, who is relatively young and very good, was elected.

C. Sometimes groups are too politically conscious to just state the facts. It's quite silly to not post them either way. I agree that I like the way the Nobel site handles women laureates by highlighting them and their achievements considering how few there are.
I'd love to know why they don't release it. There has to be some kind of sensitivity somewhere. Any ideas what their hesitation could be based upon?

I say let them show and tell. Why shouldn't they take pride in the increasing percent women if indeed it is increasing? Are they afraid to annoy the SWM senior scientists?
