Hi friends of women in science,
I had a really tough case of flu and have been more or less offline except for what I needed to do for my teaching. Apologies for the disappearance!
An article last summer in Nature (vol 510 p 458, June26, 2014) touched on issues of interest re women in science, "Close collaborations." Kerri Smith discussed how often women scientists' partners are also in science, and featured four couples in her discussion. She cited an NSF 2010 survey that found just over 1/4 of those working in science and engineering have a spouse also in these fields. An earlier study had shown that women in STEM are more likely to have a STEM partner than men in STEM.
For these four couples, their path to involvement was briefly summarized, and also some of the struggles they have had to be together. Finding both STEM professionals a position of interest in the same city poses challenges. For example, Claudia Felser and Stuart Parkin have been a couple for years and have "managed to spend up to one-quarter of their time together." The article says that recently, Parkin has been offered a position in Germany near Felser's place of employment.
What has been your experience with science couples? Do you know people who have split a position, or done other things to make nearby spousal employment work out? Do you approve of hiring a spouse to get a desired woman in STEM fields?

Hi Marian, Yes, for sure it's a real stress for both marriage and general well-being NOT to live in the same city/town. Somehow, though, people are surviving it today. I feel bad that society expects us to just take it and make no complaints, after all "you have a job!" A job isn't all there is. I know you must have had some moments of high satisfaction, although it does sound like you gave up a lot career wise to stay together.

Jobs in the same location took precedence over all else for my husband and me, and is the reason I did not take the post-doc route and did not end up in academia. The two-body problem, so to speak, has affected our career decisions throughout our lives together. There was even a short period of time when relocating our children became an issue to job change! (Do you move a high school student if you can avoid it?)
In my career I have worked with many, many, others on this subject -- lost some employes and gained some because of job location, not job. It is a choice that families make. I never found employers, academic or otherwise, who were very helpful.

I and my husband are postdocs in the same lab and have a fantastic mentor who plans to help us get either a split job or jobs in the same place. I just read in comments about your new book on Joan Steitz and Jennifer Doudna that it used to be illegal for universities to hire relatives so a wife could not be hired if the husband was. I'm so glad this broke down!

I've had a lot of couples in my lab. Sometimes they get jobs together, but a lot are like these people you mentioned, working in different cites miles apart. I feel sorry for them, but I don't think I'd argue to create a job for spouse unless he was outstanding. Jobs are too precious.
