The First Woman to Win a Fields Medal: Maryam Mirzakhani
Hi friends of women in science,
As you all know, success for women in mathematics doesn't come easily. Marian for Math just brought to my attention a real milestone. This year for the first time, a Fields Medal, said to be the mathematical equivalent of a Nobel Prize, has gone to a woman, Maryam Mirahani. She's an Iranian American on the Stanford faculty at present. Her specialty is abstract surfaces and even in her Harvard thesis work, she made enormous breakthroughs in this area.
She doodles to help her abstract visualization, which has led her daughter to suspect her mom is a painter. But she's a much rarer bird: a woman mathematician.
The Fields Medal is awarded for work before 40, which as noted in an article August 12, 2014 by Erica Klarreich in the online magazine Quanta (and later reprinted in Wired), that resctriction is especially hard on women who may pause careers for childbearing years in the pre-40 period. But Mirzhani, now 37, is a fearless visualizer and never put her career on hold. She says she's "slow" and persistent, which means she doesn't seek low hanging fruit but goes after big, challenging problems that others may consider unsolvable. Her record of solving such problems is stellar, and the article quotes a collaborator to the effect that her positive attitude makes collaborating with her very rewarding. The article ends with a quote from her, "Life isn't supposed to be easy."
Time to celebrate, and she also expects more women to receive the medal and succeed in matnematics. She doesn't want fame for herself, but hopes all women who love to think about topics in mathematics can be encouraged to continue in the area and succeed in the future.
