A Sympathetic-Seeming Face as a Leadership Asset

A new study published in The Leadership Quarterly in December tests an interesting idea. Could there be something about a face that predicts successful leadership for the woman who possesses it? A press release by Cynthia Peters at Pomona College described the study and its findings.
Coauthored by Julianna Pillemer, Elizabeth Graham, and Deborah Burke, the study had college students view 50 photos, "evenly split between male and female CEOs of comparably ranked companies in the 2007 Fortune 1000. They then ranked each face for 10 factors: compassion, interpersonal warmth, supportiveness, dominance, powerfulness, success leading a company, femininity, masculinity, competence and facial maturity."The ratings of these characeristics were tested for correlation with the companies' ranking in the Fortune 500 as well as the size of company profits.
Different traits that the viewers discerned in the faces predicted success for women CEOs versus men CEOs. Peters summarizes the findings as follows, "Higher ratings of powerfulness in male CEO faces and higher ratings of supportiveness, compassion and warmth in female CEO faces strongly predicted higher company rank among the Fortune 500 as well as company profits. In addition, higher ratings of powerfulness, dominance and leadership ability, what are traditionally thought of as masculine traits, marginally predicted company rank for female CEOs."
Burke commented that it was unexpected that more "womanly" characteristics went with success. Of course, there are far fewer Fortune 500 women CEOs then men, the women leading only 4% of these companies. But one might have predicted that the more "male" qualities of powerfulness and dominance would correlate with the success of their compnies, instead of supportiveness. She speculated that a woman may need to act powerful but look compassionate to be as effective as possible. She hoped to see that leadership by these most successful female CEOs would lead to a more compassionate leadership style across the board.

It's the tightrope women in leadership walk. I think it is fairly universal...and exhausting!

I don't usually think we can apply ideas from business to sciences, but maybe this one would work. Of course, as you suggest, it would need to be tested.

Hi Karen,
I didn't think I had a "womanly" leadership style when I was VP at Pomona College, and at least one of my women Associate Deans agreed and urged me to be more compassionate! I hope I reacted to her request in the way she hoped for, a more personal response to things she accomplished or struggled with. I guess I had just picked up a more male style without ever giving it any thought.

Hey Laura--
This is cool. I sort of suspect it's true of women in leadership everywhere in today's society. Who knows if it will last or if it's just a symptom of this time of transition to a wider role for women? I hope it will turn out to be true long-term. We need more compassionate leaders, always assuming the face looks like the personality underneath.
