Actually, Good News from Washington DC
Hi friends of women in science,
I'm sure it's a little hard to believe, with science suffering from the sequester's massive cuts, both in research and in developing new scientists. And now the government is shut down and we hold our breath in hopes that Congress won't default on our debt and incur massive increases in the interest we have to pay when our credit is downgraded. But really, there is some good news in DC.
First, Jo Handelsman is going to Washington, DC for two years, as Associate Director of Science at the Office of Science and Technology Policy. She'll replace Carl Wieman, a physicist. On August 9, Science published an interview with her about the appointment. She said she'd accepted the appointment because of her respect for the Director (John Holdren). She'll take a two year leave from her professorship at Yale to accept the position. Science asked if she will focus on STEM education, as Wieman did. She said yes, but also basic research.
We discussed one of her recent policy papers last year, a paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that showed clearly an unconscious bias against young women in science on the part of both male and female science faculty members at major research universities.
Also, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will headed by new appointee Kathryn Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space. And as we've noted earlier, Gina McCarthy, the new EPA head, is another distinguished woman scientist. She has already become the first EPA head to move against CO2 pollution as a contributor to global warming.
So we can enjoy the fact that women scientists have gained new prominence in DC, whatever else is going on.

This is such good news. She's run workshops for university faculty to help them learn active learning, as well as studying women in science and making helpful resources available to those who want to put on workshops about fairer faculty recruiting, etc. She's a great choice!
