Equal Pay---It's Time
Dear friends of women in science,
I have heard about women being paid less for the same work every year for many, many years. It's simply too much. We need to stop letting this happen. 77 cents for each dollar a man gets for the same job is just plain outrageous. If you think they work is not equivalent, why not? If you think apples and oranges can't be compared and if you compare naval and Valencia oranges they're both sweet, take a look at the AAUW's frequently recapitulated data showing that for exact comparisons, women are still behind EVEN IN THE FIRST YEAR OUT OF COLLEGE!
Nancy Pelosi posted a cartoon on her Facebook page about this today. The some day depicted on the right just needs to happen now. The House is not planning to support it. Can you contact your Congressionall Representative and let him or her know it's important to you?

Hi!
I am currently taking a summer class at NC State University called Women and Gender in Science and Technology, and we have a final project due in just a few days. For our project we created a website to show how women have vitally contributed to science and tried to explain why it is so important for women to pursue careers in STEM fields. The main goal of our site however is for our visitors to take a survey to see how much people’s opinion on the subject changes after they become aware and educated about how important women are to Science.

Glad to see the enthusiasm! Yes, this needs to be fixed. And no, it's not our problem. Not that it isn't a good idea to take a negotiation workshop, but fixing it should NOT depend on that. And I agree, people who want to help and support society should be valued and supported, not put down and have their salaries cut and benefits eliminated. It's all part of the me-first, save the rich theory of government that resulted in the big crash we are finally pulling out of. Some people who don't use evidence to test their ideas just won't see that.

I had an argument with my husband, usually a very reasonable man, about this yesterday. His viewpoint? The problem is that women refuse to learn to negotiate. I refuted with data but couldn't shake his view.
We need to lose the viewpoint that the problem is somehow OUR fault. Women can't fix this on our own. When we are assertive, we are viewed negatively and aren't team players -- it's a dammed if you do dammed if you don't situation. People should be paid for what they contribute!
On a similar note, I am also fed up with the headlines that claim public employees, be they teachers, school superintendents, elected officials, heads of utilities, etc., are overpaid. I'm sure some are, some folks in every profession are, but one considers the responsibilities that some of these folks take on, and what they would be worth in the private sector, most are not overpaid.

Go Laura! Rant away! Women should get the same pay or even more, because often they produce more in the same (supposed) job. I've seen women retire and be replaced by three men!~
