The New York Times Magazine on Women in Science

Aa Aa Aa

Dear friends of women in science,

Recently, the magazine of The New York Times ran a long article by Eileen Pollock on why women don't go into science. She was one of the first two women physics majors graduated from Yale University back in 1978, She is still asking herself questions about her decision to stop pursuing a career in physics after that experience. Recently, she revisited her Yale department and found things had changed, She said, "When I first returned to Yale in the fall of 2010, everyone kept boasting that 30 to 40 percent of the undergraduates majoring in physics and physics-related fields were women. More remarkable, those young women studied in a department whose chairwoman was the formidable astrophysicist Meg Urry, who earned her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins, completed a postdoctorate at M.I.T.'s center for space research and served on the faculty of the Hubble space telescope before Yale hired her as a full professor in 2001."

However, talking with students she found out that they still feel un-welcome even today. Pollock describes some of the stories they told at an open meeting about women in science, stories that shocked Chair Meg Urry, who arrived to find almost no seating available. In addition to a focus on how no one offered her the slightest encouragement to continue when she graduated, Pollock brings in the PNAS paper we've discussed recently and other studies that suuport the idea that bias against women in science is still prevalent.

Most of the story focused on her own experiences, back as an undergraduate and more recently as she sought to understand why she had decided to leave the field. She heard, many years later, that doing the kind of undergraduate research project she had undertaken was exceptional. But back then, she had no idea of that.

If you read this article, how do you feel about the power of statistics versus first person experience accounts? She talked about factors in women leaving the field even later than she did, and speculated that some who claimed to be leaving because of the child care issues Ceci and Williams have emphasized might really be leaving for the lack of support and encouragement they encounter every single day.

Was reaching out to young women in science with encouragement the most important factor in your own experience, or that of women you know? Do you think any good recommendations were omitted from the ones given?

cheers,

Laura

Hi Laura

I got to read this article and this messege needs to reach more and more women who are aspiring to be in science and research. Its very sad to find that the environment is completely dominated by chauvinistic males who do not want to miss any chance to discourage women to remain in science and move ahead in research. Situation is a lot more suffocating and pathetic for international women.

I think I am more convinced by data and actual studies, but I appreciate first person accounts.

My favorite quote from the article:
“success is the best revenge.”

Yup, that was me. At least for the people who were not supportive (and there were a few). I did have the support of many as well, but those are never the ones you remember!

Laura

A friend of mine, non-technical, sent this article to me. I feel strongly that the message needs to get out -- we have not begun to solve the problem of women in STEM fields.

Hi Laura,

I am more moved by the personal than the statistical, but I understand that those whose behavior needs to change must know that before they can address it, so I'm glad of the PNAS study by the Skidmore Professor and Jo Handelsman. I just feel that her lack of support was very clear, although you could sense that the guys were trying, in their Sheldon-like way, to give her fair and clear answers to the questions she asked. Why do women care more about a positive assessment than men? I don't really know.
