National Academy of Sciences Elections for 2014

Aa Aa Aa
Dear friends of women in science,

I hardly know if I should cheer, boo, or yawn, so I will just post my mixed feelings and let you comment about how it strikes you. The National Academy of Sciences elected new members and It seems that this year, they elected the largest number of women ever, 26. Another blog affiliated with Nature compared the NAS in USA with the Royal Society in UK, and found that this year the US elected 22% women while the new Fellows of the Royal Society included only 14% women. That's the good news.
I've been impressed by the Association for Women in Science's analysis showing the percentage of women PhDs indicating the women's share of scientists (the prediction) compared with the percentage of women elected to NAS each year. The latest one I could find on the AWIS website plotted the data up to and including the 2013 data. There (scroll down to see the graph), the new class was below par, being below the predicted line. The blue lines represent the women, the straight line the predicted percentage and the jagged line the actual elections. As you can see, there was a nice peak in percentages, rising above predictions, in 2005, but then the jagged line of election percentages dipped down below the predicted percentages for the six years from 2006-2011. For 2012 and 2013, the election line has been near the prediction line. My problem is, thinking about an overall fair percentage of the NAS as female scientists, I felt it needed to go above prediction for longer to compensate for the lean years when it was so low, but I understand from my interviews with several prominent male members of the NAS that pressure to increase election of women has been unwelcome and perhaps even counterproductive. However, seeing the elected line dip back down below the predicted line for 2013, and imagining extending it to 22% for 2014, is depressing to me. I suppose a savvy statistician woud try to comfort me by saying that now the real data are quite close to the prediction line, much better than from 2006 to 2011.There is a deficit, though. Not to mention producing only 20% women PhDs is not so great, although of course it's not uniform from field to field and there are fields where women and men are at equality in percentages of PhDs today.
So, here's your chance to vote. Do you find these results for women's recognition worthy of a cheer, a boo, or a yawn?
Cheers,
Laura

Hi!

I am currently taking a summer class at NC State University called Women and Gender in Science and Technology, and we have a final project due in just a few days. For our project we created a website to show how women have vitally contributed to science and tried to explain why it is so important for women to pursue careers in STEM fields. The main goal of our site however is for our visitors to take a survey to see how much people’s opinion on the subject changes after they become aware and educated about how important women are to Science.
It would really help me and my group if you could go on our site and look around a little bit and then take our survey!! As an incentive to take our survey, upon completion, if you email me at promotingchangesurvey@gmail.com with the subject line Netflix, I will email you back with a code for a free Netflix one-night rental! Here is our website: promotingchangeinscience.weebly.com

Thanks so much for helping!

Hi Laura,
I'm going with a yawn this time around. It's good that they are at least meeting the predicted value. But cumulatively, they are very far behind. I'd like to see some goals articulated around fixing that long term issue.

Cheers,
Helen

I'd say the bright side is that the outcome is back near the prediction. I'm not convinced it will necessarily go down again this year -- at a glance, the year to year correlation (in terms of direction) seems pretty poor. Let's hope things get better!

Hey Laura,

Look on the bright side. Mostly, this year it was good, the most women ever numerically, and better than UK, and near the predicted line. You'd like more, I'd like more, but it's pretty darn good as it is, I'd say.
