Benefits for Postdocs===Data Anyone?
Hi Friends of Women in Science,
I subscribe to a monthly update letter from NIH by Dr. Sally Rockey which often has news about success of women in getting NIH grants and related topics. This month, I was pleased to see something new. They are undertaking a survey to find out about postdoc benefits. We've recently discussed adjuncts and how women can become trapped in that job without benefits, without research encouragement, with low salaries, and with no escape hatch. The job like that for women of my generation was "research associate" or permanent postdoc. There were some amazing women in such jobs at my graduate school.
The data-rich environment we now live in has finally taken note of the fact that postdoc isn't the transient period that it was some 10-15 years ago. People are stalling at that position, particularly women. So now, it's a good thing for NIH to collect data on whether or not they have benefits, and if so, what benefits. I hope this will lead to more broadly supported postdoc benefits, including child care subsidies and paid childcare leaves. Time will tell. How are postdocs doing where you work? Is there a great variety or is the benefit situation standardized?

Yes, I agree - it would be wonderful to get a full account of post doc salaries relative to number of years experience post-PhD. In addition, it would be great to get a sense of how many days of parental leave post docs take on average and see if this value differs by institution or by city. One would expect that there is a gold mine of data that should be available through not only NIH but also through human resources departments.
Hi Laura,
The Postdoctoral Training Office at the City of Hope has worked hard to provide a carefully benchmarked process for managing the evaluation, promotion, and compensation of postdocs. We have also worked hard to establish and maintain a robust benefits policy that applies equally to everyone. While we have received some push-back, most postdocs and PIs recognize the merits of this approach.
