States Honor STEM Women
Hi friends of women in science,
Recently Connecticut announced that the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering selected Joan A. Steitz, Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry of Yale University to receive its 2015 Medal of Science, "for her pioneering work in understanding the structure and function of RNA." This prize is bestowed every two years, alternating with the Medal of Technology. and is the state's highest science honor. Joan Steitz is the first woman to receive this honor, which will be presented to her on May 19, 2015.
Meanwhile, California has struggled with the issue of trying to replace a statue of Junipero Serra with a statue of another honoree. The statue would be placed in the US Capitol in the National Statuary Hall. Currently, the state is represented by statues of Reagan and Serra. Recently, the California Senate passed a resolution stating that a statue of the late Sally Ride, the first US female astronaut to fly into space, was their choice as replacement. If approved by the Assembly and the Governor, the recommendation will be sent to the Joint Committe on the Library of Congress. The family of Sally Ride is establishing a foundation to raise the $500,000 needed to prepare the statue of her.
Kudos to these two states for selecting STEM women of great luster to receive these honors.

These are the kinds of things I love to tell my students, so I'm glad you post them. I hope Sally Ride does become the replacement statue for Serra. He's quite controversial now that the Pope is about to "saint" him, isn't he? Not really Francis's type of hero, I would have thought.
