Moment of deciding for a science career?

Aa Aa Aa

Hi friends of women in science,

I had a great discussion with my Biographies of Biologists class today including some consideration of whether or not there's a moment when someone decides to be a scientist, and if if matters when the decision is made, early or late in life?

We were discussing Francois Jacob, who wanted to be a surgeon. He went to fight in WW II part of the way through his med training, and while there, suffered both injuries and mental readjustment. Although he did complete the degree unpon his return, he never practiced medicine, and did not respect the field as much as he had before the war. He decided to go into research in biochemistry, and his work was recognized, along with Monod's, via the Nobel Prize. Some students felt he couldn't have a sincere love of science if he came to it late by second choice, while others felt that he understood the beauty of scientific discovery much more than James Watson, who had impressed them as after the glory and competition more than the science.

I was attracted by the thrill of discovery, and an NSF summer course for high school students, arising from the Sputnik era science bonanza, was important to me, along with a biography of Marie Curie that I read multiple times. The competition always alienated me rather than attracting me, when science teachers tried to stimulate interest via contests to solve this problem first or similar activities. I won, but I hated it. What you you think, readers? Did you come to science early or late? Is one preferable?

cheers,

Laura

Definitely not just one moment, but a series of them, mostly with excellent & creative teachers who were also talented scientists. Began in 9th grade, when i first learned what neurons do (blew my mind), then when i saw that you could have a life studying the natural world, full of questions and constant inquiry, never be bored, and always be in the company of smart people, all the while making new things and creating or refining your systems for observing the natural world (er...+ global community of people who cared about the same things), this sealed it for me. That could be your life?? Wow. It was not about competition. It was about reward and stimulation. And a community of like-minded people, across nations and universities, who were bonded by similar questions. Competition, and how to do it, handle it, came much much later, and for me is more about the application of knowledge, publishing, and resourcing grant funds. Seems that it's part of nearly any profession.

I too benefited from the post-sputnik push. For me, I was completely bored in school, and the advanced science classes that were provided for "gifted" kids, both school-year and summer, were one of the few things that interested me. (The second was foreign languages, but that came along at a later point in life. Besides, making a living in foreign languages was harder. The third was as a musician, also a hard path.)

As for competition, I thrived on it; as one of 8 kids, I lived and breathed competition. There was never enough of anything to go around. I had to be the best in everything. But, I believe scientists are made, not born, as is true for many professions. The curiosity may be innate, but it takes more to be a scientist.
