Inspiration from Sally Ride
Dear friends of women in science,
This week even Google got into the act reminding us of the wonderful career of astronaut Sally Ride, who during her life not only accomplished great things herself but worked hard to increase the accessibility of science to young women, running workshops and speaking all over the country to that end.
One of the most inspiring quotes from the first woman in space that I saw this week was this one: "Young girls need to see role models in whatever careers they may choose, just so that they can pictures themselves doing those jobs someday."
What Ride did in speaking in person to young girls was the best. Also good, as you readers of this forum know, is having biographies of a variety of women who've succeeded in science available to read, so that girls and women can envision dealing with various good and bad events successfully and imagine how such a career would feel. I wish publishers felt inspired to produce more women in science biographies. I know Marie Curie was superb, after all she's one of the few people ever to win two Nobel prizes. But she isn't in the same situation in society as today's girls. They need to be able to read about women who are scientists in NOAA, in National Parks, in major research universities, and in colleges. They need to be able to read about women who are single, married, gay, straight, of various positions on religion and from various cultures. There is a great gap in biographical literature. Why won't a public-spiritied publisher step up to fill in the gap? I know the answer. But in my opinion, it would be better for everyone's future finances if we could take easy steps to create a more diverse science workforce.

i agree about the personal touch. I had some good high school science teachers who inspired me, Edna Fletcher and Jean Carmichael, but no exciting guest speakers with a cute lab coat!
One of my current biography subjects, Jennifer Doudna, says that she heard an exciting scientist speak when she was in high school, one who dressed well and spoke in an exciting style in addition to having good science to present. She was inspired at that moment to being thinking of becoming a scientist. My other bio subject, Joan Steitz, almost didn't go to graduate school because she'd never seen a woman scientist and didn't think that was a viable choice for women. So, the personal touch is very important.

In addition to biographies, I think that showing up in person can make a positive impact on students. I wore a funny lab coat while teaching science to high school students in the Scripps College Academy summer program and students have emailed me years later to tell me how they remembered that!
I thought the Cosmos TV show that was on a year or so ago did a great job of highlighting contributions by women scientists over the years. The show also made a point of pointing out the institutional sexism that kept these women out of prestigious positions in academia and often out of the history books.

I do think this generation will read books if they really want to know what's in them. Remember quite a few are Janet Rowling-trained and think a book should be 600 pages plus, so if the bio is 150-200 pages, it seems like a bargain in time invested for info gained. At least so I've been told!
Films would be great too. I know AIBS made films about women scientists back in the 1960s, but I am not aware of any recent series.

Hey Laura,
I know you're big on biographies. Do you think today's students (and even postdocs) actually would read a book? Maybe, but I think a film series would be better. I agree that a life's events to mull over would be great, the more similar to what the woman/girl is interested in doing the better. I like your memoir, but I am a "big science" person so I really want a bio of a woman with a family making it at Harvard chemistry, say, as being more relevant to what I really want to do and be (assuming I was younger and making up my mind).

I am a college student and I just want to say I'm frustrated by the lack of biographies of women scientists. I'd love to read about Lynn Margulies, about Carol Greider, so many I've heard of but can only find in Wikipedia so far. I wish there were ten times as many women's bios!
