Eisen Says Find a Woman!
Dear friends of women in science,
I was delighted to read recently that Jonathan Eisen, Professor at University of California, Davis, invited to speak at an endowed lectureship, turned down the invitation and asked the organizers to invite a woman instead. Thanks to Susan Forsburg for drawing this blog to my attention.
Interestingly, they responded saying they knew there was a gender discrepancy and would like to invite a woman. They asked Eisen for suggestions. Instead of letting them struggle in their own ignorance, Eisen wrote back suggesting four women in fields appropriate to the lecureship, lauding their science and their spekaing skills.
I once wrote a short piece for The Scientist in which I suggested a few ways male scientists of good will could help women scientists. So my first reaction was, "THAT's what I'm talking about!" Indeed, when he explained why he turned down the offer, and then suggested women replacements, he really went the extra mile for women in science, in my opinion. But I must say, that piece I wrote for The Scientist provoked quite a lot of angry comments saying, "It's not about empowering the men, it's about empowering the women." I want both, myself. Since the men still hold power in a lot of choices for lectures and awards, I am very happy to hear that some of them react in this very positive way, helping to make strong women in science more visible. But what do you think? Do you believe women must do it all on their own and shouldn't need men to put them forward?

I love that he has a blog on the subject! I was also impressed by the response from the host. They were trying, albeit not very successfully, to re-balance the roster. Perhaps they learned an important lesson. Just by asking top males for the names of women scientists, perhaps that would help keep it in the front of their minds that its an important issue?
The sentiment is fantastic. Eisen is a multiplier, and the fact of his tweet, and your forum post here, is part of that multiplying effect. What would be great is if, on a subtle level, we got to a time when a refusal like Eisen's can be simply like "No thank you, but if you are interested in someone who knows this field well, I highly recommend you perhaps ask one of these colleagues : ___ , ___ , ____ , ____, or ____ . And this list would have some relationship to the gender ratio of people in the field. Even if that wasn''t intentional.
Upshot: making a point by example rather than having to accompany it with a lecture.

I have mixed feelings. I kind of want to do it myself, all by myself, not get it as a gift. But what Eisen said about the women in the note he posted was not faint praise at all. He clearly thinks they deserve to be recognized. I can't get too upset about that.

Laura! Really? They were upset because you wanted women to accept help from male scientists? But no woman in STEM can succeed without acceptance from male scientists, at least. Here it's way beyond, actually applause from Professor Eisen. I love it, myself!
