It's the Network! Or is it?

Aa Aa Aa

Dear friends of women in science,

I emphasize, perhaps too much, the disparity in informal connections between men and other scientists (rich connections) and women and other scientists (weaker, sometimes almost absent connections). Now a new study by Cindy Cain and Erin Leahey, called "Cultural Corrlates of Gender Integration in Science," has appeared in Gender, Work & Organization 21 (6), 516-530, 2014.

Cindy Cain commented on this work to Nature (11 Dec, 2014, vol 516, p 279), "Friendly relationships may increase women's sense of professional role confidence, thus helping them to fit in and be productive--as long as women have surpassed the 15% tokenism level in the discipline." So first, note that these relationships can't help someone dealing with the stress of being in a overwhelmingly male discipline. But the authors found that in psychology, psychiatry, and life sciences, women realized great career benefits from informal contacts, e.g. those at meetings and other informal interactions. For these women the informal contacts are almost as valuable as mentoring and other more intense interactions. The authors suggested that the benefits may come from the extra support opportunities such contacts may provide. In engineering and physics, these relationships seemed much less helpful to women.

I can comment that I've often received more invitations to speak at universities and at meetings from people (especially women) I met informally at conferences than from men I've known a long time, from graduate school and postdoctoral periods.

What do you think? Does this finding ring true to you, based on your own experience?

cheers,
Laura Hoopes

Hi Laura--
Informal networks are how things get done. When you are trying to think of people to invite, its easier to think of the name of someone you've met, even when its just a networking event compared to someone published in that field. I tend to remember work and not the person when I've only read his/her papers. It's helped me many times to get speaking opportunities, and I've invited many women in return. So I think it works!

Hi Laura--

I think women need all the contacts they can get, formal and informal. I would encourage young women to "say yes" if invited to speak at universities or at meetings. I'm told by men who organize the speaker series or meeting programs that often if they try to invite women, they are turned down. There's an opportunity in every new contact, I've found.

Hi Patty,

Ha ha! Actually I can recall one trip I made to speak in the midwest at a large public university where the man who invited me (from a meeting) did try to hit on me, many years ago. Now, it's not a concern. I do think keeping on guard is a very good idea. And I'm glad you got some benefit from going.

cheers,
Laura

Hi Laura,

I have spoken at lots of places because I get invited by people, mostly men, that I meet at meetings. I'm in neurosci, so it fits Cindy's classification there. But honestly, I wonder in some cases whether the invitation is meant to be a prelude to being hit upon by the man who invited me. I have to be on guard! It looks great on my resume, though, and sometimes I meet people I need to know when I visit other universities.
