Teaching and Learning in STEM Fields

Aa Aa Aa
Dear friends of women in science,
Recently, the AWIS newsletter, Washington Wire, came out with a couple of intresting stories on teaching and learning STEM subjects. For one thing, in March SIMCityEdu will launch science videogames. It is meant to develop problem-solving skills. I hope we can check it out and comment on it when released. If anyone has seen a preview, what did you think?
Did you learn to use a highlighter when you studied? Did you ever wonder if it really helped? The Washington Wire had another story about five common study techniques that don't seem to improve student learning, and underlining is one of them. Repeatedly re-reading was another failure. But taking practice tests did seem to improve learning. Nice that we're finally getting around to educational experiments on these methods.
If you have students or work with some outside of school, do you ever talk with them about study techniques and ways to learn? What have you heard recently about student preferences and feelings about best learning strategies? Over and over on this forum, we've seen that women benefit from things that help all students, sometimes disproportionately. So I'd love to hear about what seems to work for the students in general.
cheers,
Laura

Hi Marian for Math,

Good for you, working through the issues with your son. I am happy to hear of his success. And as a liberal arts college prof, I am totally in tune with individual learning and strategies to fit the students. But what can my friends who teach classes of 800 at UCLA and USC do? I know there are some strategies for getting small group discussions and problem solving in big classes. Do they work well, those who have tried them out?
cheers,
Laura

Hi Isra,
Yes, reading and discussing articles is a great way to excite students and empower them to feel like part of the science world.
cheers,
Laura

Hi laura,

Reading articles and making group discussions for these articles helps students keeping up with developments and also understanding these developments and take advantage

Laura,

I'm going to go off on a different tack, a bit.

Life gave me the gift of a brilliant son who is severely dyslexic and has severe issues with spatial perception, etc. He didn't learn to read until about 10 years old, but is now graduating from UC Santa Barbara with a double major in music and literature and is currently on the deans list. A long path to success.

The message I learned from all my years of working with my son, not to mention my staff at work, is that nothing works for every student. A variety of approaches is best.

I am a fan of problem solving and tests, but, as you say, not quick multiple choice tests. I like to see the students try to put what they have learned together to solve a problem.

Hi Sybil,

Yes, active learning is successful for me too. Practice tests are not so popular with us since we use essay/problem exams and not multiple choice questions, which is what a lot of practice tests use.

cheers,
Laura

Dear Laura,

I wanted to say that active learning activities, things where people have to USE the info to solve problems from the real world, work well. Especially if they relate to helping people in trouble. If you have to use information, you recall it better later on.

Hi Sarah,

I agree, those small groups do work well, especially if the students bond and help each other. I did underline, too early to highlight back in those days. It's interesting now that there is Kindle to use their highlighter, and bookmark where you want to find stuff you think is important. Whole new world!

cheers,
Laura

Hi Laura,

I think studying in groups is what works best for my students, especially first gen college students. I have always been dubious about underlining! But my mom is a librarian, so...
