Portraying Women in Science in Art Works

Aa Aa Aa

Dear friends of women in science,

As we've discussed many times, I am all for providing literary role models of women in science, aka science biographies, in case girls and women want to explore the pains and glories of careers vicariously before plunging into them. Some biographies cross the line and include some art works conveying part of the story, for example the recent book, Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout by Lauren Redniss (Dec 21, 2010). But now, thanks to Susan Forsburg, I see that Scientific American recently included art works featuring women in science in an article by Maia Weinstock. She will host an exhibit of some of these works at Art.Science.Gallery in Austin, TX from September 13-October 15. I can't post fifteen wonderful photos of these art works here, but please do go via the link to see them.

The women scientists include these: Jane Goodall, Marie Curie, Lise Meitner, Inge Lehmann, Gabrielle-Emilie le Tonnelier de Breteuil, Kathleen Yardley Lonsdale, Barbara McClintock, Agnes Pockels, Maria Goeppert-Mayer, Henrietta Swan Levitt, Mae Jemison, Rosalind Franklin, Rita Levi-Montalcini, (Augusta) Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, and Sally Ride. There are more than 15 because one painting has four of the women included in it.

I really think it's worth your while to look at these paintings. I particularly recommend the one of Marie Curie, with a curious transparent serpent. The painter, Jeff Fenwick, explained this part of the work, "The piece is meant to represent Curie's research being a miraculous breakthrough for medical science, while also suggesting the imminent danger Curie was in while working with radioactive materials."

Take a look and then let us know what you think.

cheers,
Laura

Hi Livi and Didi,

Strangely, several people who disagree with the possibility that such art could be a positive influence have emailed me instead of posting. They think one painting can't carry the impact of a whole biography or a personal encounter. In some cases for some people, they are right but I think for others, the impact could be quite strong and the person viewing the art might think about it for a long time afterwards. I will probably imagine the very serious Lise Meitner juggling bits of logic from now on, partly because I do know about how much she was neglected and had to struggle in science to get any credibility for herself as opposed to her mentor.
cheers
Laura

Hi Laura,

I think Mae Jemison's is my favorite. But I also really liked the playful quality of the Lise Meitner one. Did you read about the painter's series with Richard Feynman and others shown playing with their science? I love it!

Laura--
There isn't such a strong bright line between science and art, is there? I see Jemison is a dancer and I've known quite a few scientists who painted or played viola or cello or sang, or wrote. So I think that an artist has a good chance of focusing on essentials of the person. In my view, some but not all of these did. I didn't like the ones that looked like a colorized photo, but the ones that conceptualized the woman and her work were very moving.
