Special Issue and Web Focus in memory of Professor Leo Vining
Chemistry and Biology of secondary metabolites, natural product genomics, actinomycete bioactive metabolites
This issue of the Journal of Antibiotics is dedicated to the memory of a pioneer in antibiotic and natural product biosynthesis, Prof. Leo Vining. Dr Vining's life in research impacted several antimicrobial agents including the antibacterial chloramphenicol and the antifungal 4-hydroxy-norvaline. He did creative and groundbreaking work in the study of the control of natural product biosynthesis, for example the cephamycins, and the characterization of a number of important metabolites including the jadomycins, and the viridomycins. In this issue, Leo Vinings friends and past colleagues pay tribute to his legacy in a series of articles inspired by his vision and his example.
