We are looking for a developer to join the Ensembl team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI).

This position will entail developing and maintaining the BioMart data mining resources that Ensembl provides, with particular emphasis on their biological relevance and correctness. The applicant will also be responsible for running some of the Ensembl core team tasks related to the release cycle.

The developer will also be encouraged to advise on and contribute to other areas of software development, maintenance and quality control within the wider Ensembl group.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in a biological discipline, preferably at PhD level. S/he will have experience of working in a production software environment and organising tasks to fit defined release cycles. It would be favourable if the candidate has experience in applying their biological knowledge to bioinformatics applications.

Previous experience of BioMart and Ensembl is desirable but consideration will be given to exceptional candidates without such experience. The developer will also be expected to provide advice and make decisions on the biological correctness of the data representations, so a strong working knowledge of biological and genomic concepts is required. Although the role is not primarily a programming one, some experience of using Perl, Java, UNIX and relational databases (particularly MySQL) in a production environment would be beneficial. It is important that the candidate can demonstrate commitment to producing and distributing high-quality data, in both the biological and computational sense.

The developer must be able to work autonomously and use their own initiative as well as being able to work as part of a team when necessary. It is important to be organised and have the flexibility to cope with various challenges that can arise at short notice in a production software environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential as the role will involve liaising with BioMart users.

An initial contract of 1 year will be offered to the successful candidate.

The EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), provides cutting-edge research, service and training in the field of bioinformatics. The EBI is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus at Hinxton near Cambridge in the UK.

For further information please visit http://www.embl.org/ and http://www.ebi.ac.uk/

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.

Note that special visa requirements apply to employees from non EU countries working at EMBL-EBI in the UK. The period of work does not qualify for the Highly Skilled Migrants Programme.

To apply, please email a cover letter, CV (in English) and contact information of three professional references quoting number NJ/09/S06/EBI in the subject line, to: applications@ebi.ac.uk
