    Neutrophils exacerbate tissue damage and inflammation in advanced atherosclerosis by triggering smooth muscle cell (SMC) lysis and death. Lesional neutrophils release neutrophil extracellular traps that contain histone H4, which interacts with SMCs to induce cell lysis, leading to the destabilization of atherosclerotic plaques.

    The entry of remnants of cholesterol-rich lipoproteins, such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL), from the blood stream into the intima of large arteries initiates and then perpetuates atherosclerosis. A study published in Nature sheds new light on this important process by identifying scavenger receptor BI (SR-BI) as a major receptor that mediates LDL delivery across the endothelium into arteries.

    In a new study of 1,102 patients, a multi-item prognostic tool has been developed and validated for use in acute stroke. Using a mix of clinical variables (age and stroke severity), a process variable (administration of thrombolysis) and a biomarker (plasma copeptin), the authors were able to predict 3-month disability.
