Random Tcrb repression
Article by Schlimgen et al.*FREE ACCESS*

The influence of repressive nuclear compartments on Tcrb rearrangement remains uncertain. Krangel and colleagues show that frequent stochastic, rather than directed, association of Tcrb alleles with repressive compartments promotes monoallelic recombination at this locus.

4-1BB regulates myelopoiesis
Article by Lee et al.

The TNF receptor family member 4-1BB functions as a costimulatory molecule in T cells. Croft and colleagues show that binding of 4-1BB to its ligand regulates the production of dendritic cells by inhibiting myelopoiesis.

SOD1 activates caspase-1
Article by Meissner et al.

The enzyme superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) protects cells from superoxide toxicity. Zychlinsky and colleagues demonstrate that post-translational glutathionylation of caspase-1 by SOD1 triggers caspase-1 activation and subsequent interleukin 1β production.

Defense by autophagy
Article by Yano et al.

Whether autophagy affects host survival during intracellular bacteria infection is unclear. Kurata and colleagues find that autophagy initiated by the pattern-recognition receptor PGRP-LE promotes survival of drosophila after Listeria monocytogenes infection.

ANNOUNCEMENT

The free resource for immunologists interested in glycobiology.

The Functional Glycomics Gateway provides a wealth of glycobiology information. It includes monthly editorial updates about research advances and events, and a rich collection of research data and reference databases about glycans and glycan-binding proteins.

ANNOUNCEMENT

La Fondation IPSEN, Nature Immunology and Nature Cell Biology are pleased to announce an Emergence & Convergence mini-symposium on September 29, 2008, Gleacher Center, Chicago, Illinois, USA. This one-day mini-symposium aims to promote discussion between immunologists and cell biologists studying the molecular mechanisms underlying cell polarization, synapse formation and asymmetric cell division, as well as the influence of these processes on cell-fate determination and function.
Applications will be accepted until 8 July 2008.
