The Bdnf gene produces transcripts with either a long or short 3′ untranslated region (UTR), and previous studies have shown that long 3′ UTR Bdnf mRNA is transported from the nucleus to neuronal dendrites, where it is locally translated. In this study, the authors found that transgenic mice that lack long 3′ UTR Bdnf mRNA exhibit increased food intake — consuming 69–80% more food than their wild-type counterparts — and develop severe obesity.
