Ivor Hickey
Ivor Hickey began his research analyzing and studying erythropoiesis in mouse leukemia cells using somatic cell hybrids. This led to an interest in unstable phenotypes in tumor cell lines, caused either through, mutation, gene silencing by aberrant DNA methylation, or changes induced by atypical chromosomal segregation. He has worked extensively on the identification of tumor suppressor genes in ovarian cancer.

For several years Ivor ran the genetics degree program at Queen's University, Belfast. More recently, he has turned his attention to developing approaches to biology education that will enhance the interest among learners. These approaches include bioethics and the interaction of art with biology. He is cofounder of the Leonardo Effect Project, which has been heavily involved in encouraging schools and curricular bodies in the UK and Ireland to appreciate the importance of creativity in science education.
