Sakano and colleagues show that an odorant receptor transgene (MOR28, red) is expressed in different neurons of the olfactory epithelium from the endogenous MOR28 (green), despite identical regulatory sequences. Such mutually exclusive activation has previously been shown only for the antigen-receptor genes of the immune system. See pages 638 and 687.
