Have we been down this road before?

Fujii et al. are in the process of producing a comprehensive evaluation of the acute and longer-term hemodynamic effects of poractant alfa and beractant in very premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). The first two of these reports have appeared in advanced online publication of the Journal of Perinatology.1, 2 Both these reports suggest better outcomes with poractant alfa in very premature infants with RDS compared with beractant.

Although it was not too long ago that Holm and Cummings3 disputed the notion that it was the type of surfactant that reduced preterm infant mortality, these suggestions still continue (and may still continue to confuse and confound).
