After SCI, metformin treatment not only reverses the SCI-induced blockade of autophagic flux in microglial cells, but also promotes the transformation of microglial cells from M1 to M2 phenotype polarization, subsequently enhancing the myelin debris clearance, which consequently promotes myelin preservation and nerve repair following SCI.
