Overview

Reform through innovation

Founded in 2010, with a mission to reform and reinvigorate Chinese higher education, the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) is dedicated to virtue, truth, and advancement.

SUSTech is widely regarded as a trailblazer and innovator in advancing China's higher education. We are on the trajectory to world-class through nurturing creative leaders who excel in interdisciplinary research and generate new knowledge for the world.

Into a second decade of increasing impact

Ranked 166th in the world in the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings (1st for citations in mainland China) and first on the Nature Index rising star list for 2021 (currently 29th among all universities in the world), in eleven short years SUSTech has delivered impact through being at the cutting edge of fundamental scientific advancement.

Experimental proof of the 3D Quantum Hall effect and the observation of quantum interference in chemical reactions achieved at SUSTech were selected among China’s top ten scientific advances in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

SUSTech researchers joined the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, producing the first images of the virus morphology in its native state via our cryo-electron microscopy center and exploring the impact of the pandemic on atmospheric pollution.

We are pushing the boundaries of robotics through capturing the world fish robot speed record, developing novel artificial muscles for insect-like robots designed to aid in disaster relief operations, or testing smart gloves to help patients with tactile dysfunction recover their sensation.

SUSTech teams are also on the frontlines of the research on climate change and the drive to sustainability, studying the loss of forest in southeast Asian mountain ranges, the impact of extreme temperatures on tea cultivation, and climate change’s impact on worldwide river flows.

From Shenzhen to the world

As one of China’s most international universities, SUSTech recruits scientific minds from across the globe and our research is highly connected with the world academic community. Nearly 49% of publications come from international collaboration with more than 2,800 different institutions, and in 2020, research grants per scientist averaged 500,000 USD - one of China’s highest rates.

On our state-of-the-art campus in Shenzhen, China’s hi-tech innovation nexus, we’re busy creating the future one advance at a time. Come join us and be a part of that making.

New doping method boosts solar cell efficiency

High-efficiency solar cells have been fabricated thanks to a new method for adding molecules of an organic compound during fabrication.

Conventional solar cells are based on silicon and have a maximum efficiency of about 25%. But a new kind of solar cell based on crystals known as perovskites have been achieving efficiencies rivalling those of silicon solar cells.

However, one hindrance to fabricating high-efficiency perovskite solar cells is realizing controlled doping of the perovskite material.

Now, a team led by researchers from SUSTech in Shenzhen, China, has developed a new molecular doping process, and they used it to achieve a record conversion efficiency of 25.4% in a perovskite.

The device showed good stability, with its conversion efficiency dropping by just 3.4% after 1,000 hours of exposure to light.
