Editor-in-Chief

Gene P Siegal MD, PhD
USA, The Univerisity of Alabama at Birmingham - Gene Siegal is the Robert W. Mowry Endowed Professor of Pathology and Director of the Division of Anatomic Pathology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He also serves as the Interim Chair of the Department of Genetics, the Executive Vice-Chair of Pathology – UAB Medicine (Health System) and as a Senior Scientist in the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center & the Center for Metabolic Bone Disease. He is a graduate of Adelphi University, the University of Louisville and the University of Minnesota.

His research interests are tumor-matrix interactions during angiogenesis and tumor invasion and metastasis. Efforts by his group have been directed towards developing new reliable in vitro model systems for studying the effect of nutritional and other factors on cancer progression in humans. In separate studies he and his associates have been exploring how carbohydrate associated cell surface molecules modulate tumor cell interactions with the environment surrounding cancer cells. He has also participated in multiple gene therapy studies utilizing a variety of distinct strategies including mutation compensation, genetic immunopotentiation, and molecular chemotherapy to treat solid human neoplasms.

Dr. Siegal's clinical research interests have focused on studies of bone tumors and related conditions, a field in which he is a recognized world authority, having shared with M.J. Pitt, the Farrell Prize of the International Skeletal Society in 2002. He is the author of nearly 700 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters, abstracts and other professional writings.

Managing Editor, the USCAP journals

Catherine M Ketcham, PhD
Dr. Ketcham has been the Managing Editor of Laboratory Investigation since 2003 and of Modern Pathology since 2009. She earned her PhD. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Florida and was a postdoctoral fellow at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. She then spent seven years in the San Diego biotechnology community focusing on manufacturing issues and business development. Upon returning to the University of Florida, she held research and development positions at the Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research, and then joined the Pathology department to manage Laboratory Investigation. After relocating to Atlanta, Catherine founded Ketcham Solutions, which was contracted to edit both journals. She has traveled extensively throughout China and Japan, speaking about scientific publishing and promoting the journals. She is now based at USCAP West in Palm Springs. She is married to Glenn Ketcham and they have one son.

Senior Associate Editors

Robert W Hardy, PhD.
USA, The Univerisity of Alabama at Birmingham - Robert Hardy is an Emeritus Professor of Pathology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He received the PhD. degree from the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1988 and completed post-doctoral fellowships at Washington University and UAB. He joined the faculty at UAB in 2001. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry, as well as member of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry, and a Fellow of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry and the Association of Clinical Scientists. He has authored over 55 peer-reviewed publications, as well as reviews, book chapters and has served on grant review panels for the NIH, Department of Defense, and the American Institute for Cancer Research. Research in his laboratory focused on understanding how individual fatty acids affect cancer progression and insulin resistance at the cellular and molecular level.

Alexander Lazar, MD, PhD
USA, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center - Alexander Lazar is currently an Associate Professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He received his MD and PhD. degrees from the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Texas and completed an Anatomic Pathology residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA.

His clinical work at MD Anderson focuses on the diagnosis of bone and soft tissue tumors and solid tumor molecular testing, currently focused on next generation-based sequencing for therapeutic selection and triage to clinical trials.  As founding Director of the ACGME accredited Soft Tissue Pathology Fellowship Program, he is training the next generation of bone and soft tissue pathologists and translational researchers.  His research has centered on the molecular characteristics of many sarcoma types for use in diagnosis, correlation with clinical outcome and searching for novel therapeutic interventions. He has published in more than 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters.

Akihiro Umezawa, MD, PhD
Japan, National Institute for Child Health and Development - Akihiro Umezawa is Deputy Director of National Center for Child Health and Development (NCCHD) Research Institute, where he is also Head of Center for Regenerative Medicine. He has a secondary appointment in the department of Reproductive Biology. He was graduated from Keio University School of Medicine in 1985 and received his PhD. degree from Keio University in 1990. He completed postdoctoral fellowships at University of California San Diego and Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (formerly La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation).  He joined the faculty at Keio University School of Medicine, Tokyo in 1995. In 2002, Dr. Umezawa was appointed as Head of Department of Reproductive Biology in the National Center for Childhood Health and Development, Tokyo.

His interest is Research & Development of human embryonic stem cell-based cellular products. He directed his team for human embryonic stem cell (ESC)-based therapy/regenerative medicine. Previously he was Deputy Director of Center for Product Evaluation, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) and worked on the evaluation of biologics including cellular therapy products and the development of regulatory science. He was also appointed as Special Assistant to the President of PMDA.  He published 400 peer-reviewed articles in the field of stem cell biology and medicine in correlation with disease phenotypes.
