- On the 20th July, The Genetics Society held a fantastic Garden Party to celebrate the 200th birthday of Gregor Mendel: a man regarded by many as the "father of modern genetics". In this episode we showcase a talk given on the day by Prof. Alison Woollard (University of Oxford) titled: ‘Mendel to Modern Genetics’.
This Special Issue celebrates Mendel’s 200th birthday by focusing on exceptions to the Mendelian ‘laws’. Discovery in science is often driven forward more by exceptions than by rules. In genetics, Mendel’s laws of heredity provide the basic ‘rules’. Recent decades have seen an explosion in discoveries that violate these rules, which has driven the field of genetics forward. This special issue presents excellent papers on the continuous evolution of genomics tools, techniques, and statistical methods needed to meet future food, feed, and fibre demands. Areas covered are: use of multi-parental populations, Quantitative trait nucleotide (QTN) identification, breeding nutrient-dense, disease-resistant, climate-resilient crop varieties for food and nutritional security.
Pär Ingvarsson is professor of Plant Genomics and Plant Breeding and his main interests are understanding the genetic basis of adaptive traits, mainly in woody perennial plants such as aspens and spruces. He did his PhD at Umeå University and spent time as a postdoctoral researcher at University of British Columbia and University of Virginia.
