No excess cancer risk for non-erosive disease

A population-based cohort study with 2,081,051 person-years of follow-up conducted in Denmark, Finland and Sweden (which have exceptionally complete health registry data) shows that the incidence of oesophageal adenocarcinoma is not different from that in the background population for patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and normal findings on upper endoscopy. The researchers suggest that repeat endoscopies for cancer surveillance offer no advantage in this group.
