Microbiomes of Hadza hunter–gatherers

Non-industrialized human populations are under-represented in microbiome research. In a new study published in Cell, researchers present ultra-deep metagenomic sequencing data from 351 faecal samples from the Hadza hunter–gatherers of Tanzania. Of the microbial genomes present, 44% had not yet been recorded in existing catalogues. In addition, they pinpointed gut-resident species that are not present in the microbiomes of industrialized populations. Interestingly, industrialized gut microbiomes were observed to be relatively enriched in genes associated with oxidative stress.
