A prospective study showed that in 501 patients ≥50 years of age with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and with a mean body mass index of 31.4 (±5.6) kg/m2, the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis was 65%, 14% and 6%, respectively. Moreover, obesity and insulin use were associated with increased odds of advanced fibrosis, OR = 2.50 (95% CI 1.38–4.54, P = 0.003) and OR = 2.71 (95% CI 1.33–5.50, P = 0.006), respectively. Among the patients with cirrhosis (n = 29), 2 had hepatocellular carcinoma.
