A new study published in Cell Host & Microbe showed that the enteric nervous system (ENS) regulates gut microbiota homeostasis by interacting with intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). “The gut contains the densest neurons besides the brain, suggesting extensive crosstalk between enteric neurons and the gut microbiota,” says Chao Lei, the first author of this study.
