Anatomy-preserving adjustable intragastric balloon is safe and promotes durable weight loss

Adjustable intragastric balloons offer a minimally invasive and anatomy-preserving alternative to bariatric surgery. In a multicentre randomized trial conducted in the USA, 288 adults with obesity were randomly assigned to balloon implantation plus diet and exercise, or diet and exercise alone. Mean weight loss at 32 weeks was 15.0% in the balloon group and 3.3% in the control (diet and exercise only) group. Balloon adjustment was needed in 80% of implanted individuals to combat weight loss plateaus or intolerance. Among individuals in the balloon group, 74% maintained their weight loss at 14 months, 6 months after device removal. The balloon device had an acceptable safety profile and its adjustability provided a patient-tailored approach that prevented 75% of early removals.
