Abstract
WHEN Manson first incriminated mosquitoes in the transmission of Wuchereria bancroft1,2, he suggested that filariasis is acquired by drinking water in which infected mosquitoes had died. Later evidence showed that mosquitoes could convey infective larvae directly to human skin4. Yokogawa later revived the issue of oral transmission but concluded that infection per os was highly improbable5. It seems, therefore, that no one has hitherto demonstrated transmission of W. bancrofti or any other mosquito-“nursed” filarial worm by mouth. We report here oral infection of the dark-clawed Mongolian jird (gerbil), Meriones unguiculatus, with the filarial worm Brugia pahangi.
