Abstract
WE have been able to determine the structure of copper sulphate pentahydrate, which was the first crystal used by Friedrich and Knipping to diffract X-rays. The unit cell has dimensions: α0 = 6·12 A., b0 = 10·7 A., c0 = 5·97 A., α = 82° 16′, β= 107° 26′, γ = 102° 40′, and contains two molecules of CuSO4·5H2O. The only symmetry possessed by the crystal is a centre of inversion.
