The compromised dense mucus layer in Cybanmf333 mice facilitates penetration of microbiota into crypts, leading to direct contact of bacteria with the epithelium. Cybanmf333 mice have a missense mutation in Ncf1 (p22phox) which renders NADPH oxidases Nox1-3 inactive while preserving Nox4 activity.
