PLANTS IN DENTISTRY SERIES: TOOTHACHE TREE (ZANTHOXYLUM AMERICANUM)
The cover images in volume 218 all feature botanical illustrations of plants and trees with a connection to dentistry some from the past and a selection still used in present times. This issue features a North American shrub Zanthoxylum americanum, also known as the Toothache Tree because its bark has traditionally been used by North American tribes to remedy dental pain. The bark is chewed to create a paste which was rubbed on the gums. This small tree is part of the citrus family and is part of the same genus as sichuan pepper. It is also known as the Prickly Ash.
