PLANTS IN DENTISTRY SERIES: CLOVE, SYZYGIUM AROMATICUM

The cover images in volume 218 all feature botanical illustrations of plants and trees with a connection to dentistry - some from the past and a selection still used in present times. This first issue in the series depicts cloves, which are the aromatic flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum, a tree in the family Myrtaceae. Cloves are a traditional remedy for the temporary relief of toothache as the oil extracted from a clove, known as eugenol, has antiseptic and anaesthetic properties. More information about this cover series can be found on page 4 of this issue.
