Gut metabolite mediates neoantigen generation in AS

Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are implicated in various autoimmune diseases, including ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and promote autoimmunity through the generation of neoantigens. In a new study, researchers have developed a method for systematically screening for PTMs associated with AS, uncovering a microbiome-metabolite-related mechanism underlying neoantigen generation.

“T cell antigen discovery is challenging owing to the low frequency of antigen-specific T cells and cross-reactivity of the T cell receptor,” explains co-corresponding author Liang Chen. “In this latest study, we identify and verify one HLA-restricted T cell epitope specific for autoantigens.”
