Stuck on you — pilus-mediated adherence in chronic UTI

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) gain a fitness advantage in chronic UTI via urothelial glycome remodelling, which enables pilus-mediated adherence and late-stage colonization, according to new data published in Cell Host & Microbe. Vaccination with the F9 pilus tip-associated Fml adhesin FmlH could protect against chronic infection.

In vivo, competitive infection between UPEC strains with either wild-type or deleted FmlH showed that UPEC with wild-type FmlH were dominant at 28 days post infection; however, no growth difference between UPEC strains was observed in vitro, indicating a specific in vivo advantage for the wild-type strain.
