Neutrophils play the right CARD

New research conducted in mouse models of autoimmune and inflammatory disease reveals that caspase recruitment domain-containing protein 9 (CARD9) is required for chemokine release by neutrophils during inflammation. “We have shown that CARD9 is strongly involved in autoantibody-induced arthritis ... and dissected the mechanism involved,” explains Attila Mócsai, corresponding author of the study. These observations are quite surprising, given that neutrophils were generally thought to be transcriptionally quiescent.

Although CARD9 is principally known for its critical role in antifungal immunity, genome-wide association studies have consistently implicated the CARD9 gene in inflammatory and rheumatic diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, ankylosing spondylitis, IgA nephropathy and rheumatoid arthritis.
