To the Editor:

Industry has retreated from investment in brain disorders due to high failure rates in clinical trials. With new successes in genetics, however, there are early hints of renewed interest, especially for rare monogenic disorders. What would accelerate re-engagement with brain disorders? A new embrace of basic studies of disease mechanism—a key missing element of success—and eschewal of putative animal models of disease that have proven a distraction may help.
