I read with great pleasure the Special Feature detailing the William A Silverman lecture presented by David Stevenson at the Pediatric Academic Society Meetings May 4-7 2013.1 I was present at this wonderful talk and would like to make some additional comments about Dr Silverman. I too was fortunate enough to receive many ‘missives’ from him especially as we were trying to establish the Journal of Perinatology (in the early days) as a credible, peer-reviewed publication.

His term sempere plangere (always complain or lament) was coined as a reflection of how wary he was of medical claims unsupported by strong evidence. When sending many of us these short pieces, he would write "Welcome to the club". I was never able to determine who else was in the club.
