Collagen-targeted MRI contrast agent for liver fibrosis detection
A novel MRI gadolinium-based contrast agent designed to bind with collagen, a key component in liver fibrosis progression, provides direct quantification of collagen deposition in several preclinical liver disease models. This tool could have large implications in clinical diagnosis and drug trials.

Consensus Statement
| Open AccessAdvances in the evaluation of anorectal function
Faecal incontinence and evacuation disorders are common and substantially impair quality of life. In this Consensus Statement, the authors describe recommended tests for the evaluation of anorectal function and the clinical relevance of these tests in the management of patients to help guide the practising clinician.

Endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection of large colonic polyps
Most colorectal polyps can now be resected endoscopically using either mucosal resection or submucosal dissection. Although the former is an established technique, the latter has seen slow adoption in the West. In this Review, the authors summarize the indications for both procedures and discuss new advances in endoscopic polyp surgery.

A step closer to screening for curable pancreatic cancer?
Early detection is the best opportunity to decrease cancer mortality rates. As such, a new study has made a head-to-head comparison of endoscopic ultrasonography and MRI for the detection of pancreatic lesions in high-risk asymptomatic individuals. Using multiple techniques for detection and screening could be the best approach.

NBI in Barrett esophagus—look more and sample less
Narrow-band imaging (NBI) might improve the detection of Barrett esophagus and its associated neoplasia. A randomized controlled trial suggests that NBI with targeted biopsies can yield the same detection rate for Barrett esophagus with fewer biopsies compared with standard high-definition white light endoscopy with random biopsies.

Colonoscopy: basic principles and novel techniques
Colonoscopy is an endoscopic procedure that allows the entire colon to be examined, enabling both the detection and removal of premalignant lesions and colorectal tumors. Hazewinkel and Dekker provide an overview of standard colonoscopy procedures and describe the latest technical advances. They stress the importance of a minimal set of quality indicators to continuously monitor and optimize colonoscopic examinations.
